Dr. Murray, 58, left the courtroom in handcuffs after a jury reached a unanimous verdict. While dozens of fans outside cheered others burst into tears. It was a highly emotional day.
Jackson't brother, Jermaine, said, "Justice was served. Michael is with us."
Reuters reports that Murray faces up to four years in jail when he's sentenced on November 29, but that he may spend only a few months behind bars in LA's overcrowded cells.
The main cause Jackson's death was a fatal dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol that is normally used in surgery. Murray pleaded "not guilty" to giving him that fatal dose.
The argument presented by prosecutors was that Murray was grossly negligent in administering the propofol to help Jackson sleep. Defense lawyers claimed Jackson delivered the fatal dose to himself.
Murray has been free on bail for the past two years. The judge ordered he be held in custody until his sentencing. Murray did not testify duirng the six-week trial and reports say he looked impassive as the guilty verdict was announced in the packed courtroom.
Jackson's mother, Katherine and sister Rebbie sobbed silently as the verdict was read. His siblings La Toya and Randy were there, along with his father Joe.
When asked if she was pleased with the verdict, Katherine said, "I am."
On June 25, 2009, Jackson was found dead in his Los Angeles mansion about three weeks before a series of concerts in London aimed at returning him to the spotlight. He had been humiliated in his 2005 trial and acquittal on child molestation allegations.
Murray admitted giving Jackson a small dose of propofol to help him sleep. His lawyers argued Jackson was dependent on the drug and likely gave himself an extra, fatal dose and swallowed a handful of sedatives without Murray knowing.
Judge Michael Pastor said Murray was "now a convicted felon who had been deemed the causative factor in Michael Jackson's death." Pastor said the doctor should be detained before being sentenced to protect public safety.
